20 rescue elephants get handmade sweaters made by local women to face freezing weather in Northern India this winter: 'Their saviors don't want them to endure another uncomfortable day ever again'

You know what they say: an elephant never forgets, and the elephants in Northern India surely will never forget this winter. 20 elephants were rescued from illegal captivity, circuses, or trafficking and relocated to an elephant conservatory to live out the rest of their days in peace. However, today they face a new challenge - the harsh winter weather that is about to sweep through their home. Elephants are not equipped to survive freezing weather, and so, some local women took it upon themselves to help. They made sweaters, leg warmers, and giant blankets by hand for the elephants to help them stay warm.

If you thought it was hard to find clothes in your size, imagine how hard it is for these elephants! It must take them hours, even days, to knit something that fits an elephant. But the size of the job didn't discourage them at all; they rose to the challenge and gave each elephant something to stay at least a little warmer and fuzzier throughout the coming cold.

They said that they don't want the elephants to have to experience discomfort ever again, and we hope they never do. At the very least, they'll win best dressed at the conservatory's fashion show!

We know it is probably a smelly job, but we would love to work at an elephant conservatory. They're such majestic animals. There must be so much in those big heads of theirs; we're sure that there's a lot we could learn from them if we could speak the same language.

Normally, we don't love this kind of “grandma style” of crochet/knitting. But, when you put it on an elephant, we think it's the bee's knees. We'd absolutely wear some of it if they made us some.
